Heavy rain is causing flooding in the town of Amherst, N.S.

The town's fire chief, Greg Jones, says heavy rain caused the brook that runs through the community to spill its banks. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is also a worry.

Jones is resting this morning after a busy night last night.

"We had a local seniors' complex that was evacuated as a precaution. With my crew, we had 57 people out, as well as the Amherst police department. to help secure some things up and public works was also doing some work," said Jones.

The name of the complex isCentennial Villa.

Jones says crews also dealt with a significant fire last night on Fullerton Street.

A family of six was put out of their home and another 20 people in two nearby residences had to be evacuated as a precaution.

No one was injured. The Canadian Red Cross is assisting.
