Baddeck water service restored after treatment plant flood

Water service in Baddeck, N.S., has beenrestored to full operation, but conservation and boil-water notices remain in effect.

Megan Cooper, the village's chief administrative officer, said residents are asked to boil their water until further notice as a precaution.

She said the notice will be lifted once the Department of Environment gives its approval.

Leaking pipes caused more than two-thirds of the treated water to drain out of the village's storage tower early Thursday morning, flooding the treatment plant and leaving stored water at a "dangerously low" level.

Brian Morrison, chair of the village commission, said the electric pumps in the plant were soaked, but were taken to Sydney and dried out on Friday.

Students at Baddeck Academy were sent home Friday morning shortly after arriving due to the water conservation and boil notices.

Bottled water available

The village set up a comfort centre at the Baddeck fire hall on Friday. Residents are able topick up bottledwater.

The comfort centre was expected to remain open until 7 p.m. on Friday. Thevillage said it would reopen on Saturday morning.

Nearly 50 people took advantage of the bottled water before water service was restored on Friday. The village has about 900 residents.
