Bill Casey is the candidate for Cumberland-Colchester

Bill Casey will run in the next federal election, this time as a Liberal.

The politician was chosen as the candidate forCumberland-Colchesteron Saturday when hebeat JamieRhaeOudemansfor the opportunity at a party meeting inDebert.

Casey first announced he was seeking the Liberal seat in his former riding last November. At the time, it caught his former campaign manager, MP Scott Armstrong,off-guard. They both worked together as members of the Conservative Party. Now, they will run against each other when the writ drops.

Casey made headlines in 2007 when he was kicked out of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative caucus for voting against his government's budget.Casey claimedit broke the Atlantic Accord with NovaScotiaand Newfoundland and Labrador.

He ran successfully as an independent MP in October 2008 and held the seat until April 2009, when he retired to take a high-profile provincial government job.

Casey said while he was originally elected as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, that party no longer exists and the Liberal Party reflects his values.
