A 19-year-old Lower Sackville man has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after he was attacked on Tuesday night at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility, say Halifax Regional Police.

It happened at around 10:40 p.m in the man's cell.

Police have a 20-year-old Halifax man in custody. The Department of Justice says the suspect is the man's cellmate and no one else was in the cell.

The attack happened after evening lockdown. There are no cameras in the cell, a department spokesperson said. So far, it's unclear how long the attack lasted and how guards were alerted.

It's not believed a weapon was used.
