Keltic LodgeResort and Spa in Cape Breton is cutting at least 30 jobs and some services, a local councillor says.

Thelodge in the Cape Breton Highlandsis closed for the season. When it reopens in June, there will be no bell-hop service, fine dining or gift shop, said Larry Dauphinee.

Dauphinee, who represents Ingonish Beach on Victoria County municipal council, fears for the future of the lodge, considered one of Nova Scotia's premier resorts.

"Once we lose this reputation, if we give it away, we're never gonna get it back,"he said Tuesday. "You can't even put a price figure on that to try to build that up again."

Dauphinee said he heard about the cuts recently from a manager. The lodge is owned by the province but operated by New Castle, a hotel management company.

CBC's calls to Keltic Lodge management haven't been returned.
