Highway 104 crash that killed 3 nets charge for woman, 86

An 86-year-old woman has been charged with a motor vehicle offence for an accident that claimed the livesof a teacher and two young girls in Cape Breton last winter.

The crash happened on Highway 104 near Port Hawkesburyon Dec. 1.

Kayla Cotton, from Louisdale, died at the scene in Port Malcolm. She was with two students a 12-year-old girl from Louisdale and a 13-year-old girl from Mexico.

RCMP said Cotton'scar, which had been heading westbound, began to spin and was hit by another vehicle heading eastbound. It isn't known why Cotton's car began to spin.

The 86-year-old driver ofthevehicle that crossed the centre line hasbeen charged with driving left of centre, an offence which carries a fine of about $295. She is due in court in August.

Cotton was a teacher at the Felix Marchand Education Centre and also coached volleyball at the Richmond Education Centre both in Louisdale where the two girls were students.

Cotton and the students were heading to Port Hawkesbury for a school-sponsored event when the crash happened.
