Cape Breton Regional Coun. Darrell Flynn dead at 58

Cape Breton Regional Municipality Coun. Darrell Flynn has died in hospital after a brief illness.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality Coun.Darrell Flynn has died in hospital after a brief illness.

He was nearing the end of his first term on council, representing District 10, and announced in the spring he intended to re-offer in October's municipal elections.

Flynn was hospitalizedon June 22 with complications related to pneumonia.

In a statement, regional Mayor Cecil Clarke extended his sympathies to Flynn's widow and two children and their families.

"We are deeply saddened by this sudden and tragic loss of such a good person, in the prime of his life, giving back to his community," Clarke said.

Flynn was a successful businessman as long-timeowner of the Swiss Chalet restaurant in Sydney.

Prior to winning his council seat, he also served as an elected member oftheCape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board.

Flynn is the second regional councillor to die during this term.

District 12 councillor Charlie Keaganpassed awayin Januaryfromcomplications aftera December heart attack.

In addition,District 4 Coun.Claire Detheridge suffered a brain hemorrhagein December and will not re-offer in October.
