Cape Breton University students on a roll with sushi delivery

Some Chinese students at Cape Breton University are hoping to broaden the local food scene.

Some Chinese students at Cape Breton University are hoping to broaden the local food scene.

Lucy Di is in the MBA program and started a sushi delivery business with a classmate about a month ago. Its part of their entrepreneurship course.

Di said they enlisted hospitality major, Humphry Yu, as a cook.

"Humphry is my best of friends, and he loves sushi, she said. We went to Vancouver, Toronto, also Montreal. We find there are lots of sushi restaurants, they're very successful. People love sushi, both international or the local people. So we started thinking, maybe we can do that."

The business is called Mr. Sushi. It's been selling rolls for about a month now out of rented kitchen space in Glace Bay.

Di saysat firstmost of their customers were other international students, then word started to spread.

Business turning a profit

"It's great, she said. "Last week we just passed our break even, and we have a profit now."

The pair are now talking with the university about getting a room with the necessary kitchen facilities on campus, where they can continue their delivery service, and sell out of the cafeteria.

The plan is to share the space with another MBA student, Alicia Jiang. Jiang started cooking traditional Chinese food for friends last year, and found there is a demand.

"I notice that Cape Bretoners have a very conventional view towards food, and food choices here are pretty limited, especially on campus, she said. So hopefully we can bring them some good choices, and good quality food."

Jiang says, if her initial venture succeeds, she'd like to expand into Thai food.
