Chronicle Herald confirms end of Sunday edition

The Chronicle Herald is changing its weekend publishing strategy, ending its Sunday paper, while offering a larger Saturday edition.

The announcement comes several weeks after a union representative told CBC the changes were coming.

Herald president and CEO Mark Lever told CBC news that suscribers will not receive extra papers or a reduced price to compensate for the loss of Sunday's paper.

He said the Saturday edition and online presence will have more content starting Apr. 20.

In a release, the Chronicle Herald said the weekend edition would be a redesigned paper, with more information than the current Saturday and Sunday papers combined.

"This new direction means a redistribution of resources to give greater focus on both print and digital content to better serve our audiences," said Lever in the release.

The weekend edition will put a greater emphasis on local sports and homes.

Breaking news on Sundays will be posted on the website.

The new paper will begin publishing April 20. The union said previously that no job losses are expected.

The Halifax Herald Limited, owned by the Dennis family of Halifax, publishes the paper, which is one of the last independently owned newspapers in Canada.
