Man, 49, at centre of Dartmouth emergency alert turns himself in

Halifax Regional Police say a 49-year-old man who they had described as armed and dangerous, and who was at the centre of an emergency alert earlier this week, has turned himself in.

Police said in a news release Thursday the man was arrestedWednesday night and is scheduled to appear in provincial court on charges of assault, uttering threats and breaching a probation order.

Police said they were called to the Gaston Road area of Dartmouth, N.S., Tuesday morning following reports that a man with a firearm was threatening people.

An emergency alert was issued warning people to be on the lookout for the man, but officers were not able to find him.

Const. John MacLeod said the man isn't facing firearms charges, as police have not found a gun. He said witnesses and complainants told police the man may have been armed.

A section of Gaston Road was closed Tuesday, but later reopened. Police focused their investigation on a home on the road, and officers wearing body armour and carrying long guns were seen patrolling the property.
