Lower Clarks Harbour man charged with firearms offences after shots fired Tuesday

A 52-year-old man is facing several charges for firearms offences after a report of shots fired in Lower Clarks Harbour, N.S., Tuesday evening.

A 52-year-old man has been charged with firearms offences after a report of shots fired in Lower Clarks Harbour, N.S., Tuesday evening.

The shots had triggered a dangerous person alert for the areaand residents were told to shelter in place.

In a news release Thursday morning, Nova Scotia RCMP said officers had responded to the report on a property on Centreville South Side Road. They say the man had been in a dispute with five other people.

Police allegethe man fired a shotguninto the air before fleeing.

Officers with Barringtonand Shelburne RCMP, the Nova Scotia Emergency Response Team and police dogs searched the area, before finding the man at a home on Centreville South Side Road.

"After a short negotiation, the man surrendered peacefully and was safely arrested," the police release said.

The emergencyalert endedat 12:28 a.m. Wednesday. No one was injured.

Police said the shotgun believed to have been used in the incident was found where the shots were fired.

The man, who is from Lower Clarks Harbour,is now in custody and hasbeen charged with careless use of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and uttering threats.

He is expected to appear in Shelburne provincial court on Thursday.

Police said the investigation is continuing.
