Garbage-collecting divers have improved the view from the boardwalk in Halifax harbour.

Garbage-collecting divers have improved the view from the boardwalk in Halifax harbour.

City officials ordered a cleanup of the ocean flooralong the waterfront after a sewage plant, opened in the fall of 2007, cleared the water, makingthe litter and debris more visible to passersby.

Divers were sent out Monday to bring up the garbagebetween Casino Nova Scotia and the Electropolissound stage. They filled a barge with about 1.5 tonnes ofdebris, said James Campbell, communications director for the Harbour Solutions project.

"[It was] quitea collection car tires, truck tires, pylons, shopping carts andsome beer kegs seem to be the most popular stuff," Campbell said.

"It'll make a big visual change to the harbour when people are walking along the boardwalk."

Campbell said the cleanup cost less than $5,000.
