So far, we've hung drywall, become route marshals at a fundraising walk this month, CBC Nova Scotia's Do Crew is getting ready to roll up its sleeves and do some spring cleaning!

We're going to help the YWCA by cleaning its learning kitchen and child care centre at its Spryfield location. It's the sort of deep cleaning that is hard for the regular staff and volunteers to get done while they are running their programs.

The YWCA serves women and girls in many ways. A big part of that is working to end homelessness and violence against women.

It runs Supportive Housing for Young Mothers, or SHYM, a program in which young moms share a house and are taught skills to help them along.

For single women who face barriers to sustaining a house, it has a program called WISH: Women In Supportive Housing, which provides housing and supports of various kinds.

The YWCA also runs a conversation club for women newcomers, programs that help women enter or return to the workforce and a free program that teaches healthy eating on a budget called Food First. It includes a weekly meal for the women who come and that allows for a conversation with the women about nutrition.

The Do Crew will have an orientation,a snack and then will start scrubbing and cleaning once the kids at the child-care centre are up from their nap.
