Lawyer Duane Rhyno defending himself on breach of conditions charges

A lawyer from Lower Sackville, N.S. is representing himself in an unusual battle against the RCMP and the Crown.

Duane Rhyno is facing charges of breaching conditions of a court order stemming from a September, 2014, casewhereRhyno was accused of human trafficking and pimping a woman out of a hotel in the Annapolis Valley.

While he was awaiting trial on the pimping charges, Rhyno was released on conditions, including he stay away from the woman involved in the case.

Charges dropped

Police allege Rhyno met with the woman in the Halifax area in violation of the court order.

This spring, the Crown withdrew the pimping charges against Rhyno. But the breach charges remain.

On Friday in provincial court in Dartmouth, Rhyno complained he still hasn't received all the evidence the police collected against him. He said he may request a stay of proceedings because the disclosure hasn't reached him in a timely manner.

The Crown has agreed to try to get more material from police to help Rhyno in his defence.

The case returns to court in October.
