The municipality of East Hants has closed all sidewalks in Enfield, Elmsdale, Lantz, Milford and Shubenacadie because of dangerous conditions due to snowbanks.

Pedestrians are being asked to stay off all sidewalks until they can be reassessed on Feb. 25 after Thursday and Sunday's storms.

"The risk of collapse of snow banks is high throughout the municipality. There are many snow banks exceeding five feet [1.5 metres] in height with large ice boulders encased within them," said Brian Hebb, speaking for the municipality in a news release.

Hebb said the municipality is working to clear fire hydrants and storm drains of snow. In order to do that safely, he says pedestrians can't be in the way.

"Sunday's weather event may bring a mix of snow and rain which will challenge the drainage abilities of the roads and sidewalks, with potential for an increase in ice buildup," he said.

"Municipal staff will continue to monitor the situation and post signage to indicate sidewalk closures."
