Ajail guardwas stabbed Saturday afternoon at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth, police say.

Halifax regional police were called to the jailat about 2 p.m. The guard was taken to Dartmouth General Hospital with a stab wound in his abdomen. The injury was not life-threatening.

Police removed an inmate from the jail to question him about the incident.

"We anticipate that charges will be laid, but he will be returned to the correctional centre to be taken to court, probably on Monday, to face some charges," Sgt. Bill Morris said Sunday.

Last month, two inmatesat thejail were charged with aggravated assault after a stabbingin June.

An inmate was stabbed in a common room in the north unit of the jail on June 15 during an altercation involving three prisoners. The victim was treated in hospital and released.

The June stabbing prompted guards to lock down the entire jail. Some prisoners in the west unit refused to leave a day room and return to their cells.

Guards donned riot gear when 17 inmates some wearing masks started breaking sprinklers, windows and equipment and covered security cameras.

The inmates returned to their cells without incident about two hours later.
