Halifax boy, 14, charged with making child pornography

Halifax police have charged a14-year-old Preston-area boy with making and distributing child pornography after a video was posted on a social media site.

Police said they were alerted on April 8 about an online video. It showed a 15-year-old girl performing a consensual sexual act with a 14-year-old boy.

"What I can tell you is that the sex act was consensual between the suspect and the victim," said Const. Pierre Bourdages. "However the victim did not consent to this interaction be recorded or videotaped."

Officers said they believe thesuspect shot the video on April 5 at a partywhere alcohol was served.

Bourdages said the video was posted online, and then "tagged" to make more people aware that it was there. He saidit was online for two days before it was flagged to police by an adult.

"The video was taken down very quickly by the social media site," said Bourdages.

"The internet being what it is, we know that the video was deleted from the social media site, but we will never be sure that that video is not somewhere else."

The internet child exploitation unitseized a cellphone earlier this month. On May 24, the suspect turned himself in to police.

The teen has since been released from custody and will appear in court on June 20. He's been ordered not to use the internet in that time.

Bourdages said this is not related toanother Nova Scotia case, involvingteenager Rehtaeh Parsons.

According to Leah Parsons, four boys sexually assaulted her daughter Rehtaeh when she was 15.A photo of the attack was then said to have circulated at her Cole Harbour, N.S., school and on social media.

On April 7, Rehtaeh was taken off life-support after attempting to take her own life a few days earlier. She was 17.
