Halifax council approves $47M for LED street light conversion project

Halifax regional council has approved a $47.6-million project to purchase street lights from Nova Scotia Power and convert them to LED bulbs.

The work will be done over the next seven to 10 years, and will be paid for by the municipality's power savings from the conversion.

LED Roadway Lighting Ltd.will provide the LED light bulbs and the old bulbs will be recycled at Dan-X, a company in Burnside.

Rural and suburban areas will be converted first.Privately owned roads are not included in the project and a number of councillors raised concerns about leaving them out.
