Halifax council delays Wellington Street development decision

Halifax city council will vote on the fate of a Wellington Street apartment proposal at its next meeting.

Halifax city council heard Tuesday nightfrom residents and the developer of a controversial development in south-end Halifax about the project.

A city planning committee has recommended against allowing a controversial development to move forward.

The development company, Dino Capital, wants to put in two high-rise apartment buildings on Wellington Street near Gorsebrook Park.

Opponents of the buildings have gathered more than 1,000 names on a petition asking the city not to allow it.

Wellington Street is a short, quiet, street that already has two apartment buildings on it. After those buildings were built, neighbours complained and the city implemented a new rule forbidding construction of buildings higher than three storeys on the street.

The proposed buildings are eight and 10 storeys high and there is concern this will set a precedent for developers all over the city to bend the rules.
