Halifax Regional Police are urging motorists to drive with caution, especially around school buses, after a number of incidents in the Halifax region over the last two days.

Police say Tuesday and Wednesday, between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., officers in the Hammonds Plains Road and KillarneyDrive area of Bedfordissued five tickets to drivers who passed stopped school buses with flashing lights.

"Motorists are reminded that passing school buses in either direction when the red lights are flashing, regardless of the number of traffic lanes, not only puts children in danger, but is illegal and carries substantial fines. It is also an offence to fail to proceed with caution when passing a school bus exhibiting flashing amber lights," HRP said in a news release.

Police will continue to patrol school zones during September to "educate motorists and enforce motor vehicle fines," police said.

The warning come just after the announcement that several school buses in the Cape Breton-VictoriaRegional School Board will now have cameras to catch drivers who pass buses..
