Halifax Public Gardens a no-feeding zone for ducks

Halifax regional council has come up with a list of 50 spots where it will be illegal to feed the ducks and pigeons.

Halifax regional council has come up with a list of 50 spots where it will be illegal to feed the ducks and pigeons.

The list of municipal areas, which includes the Public Gardens and Sullivans Pond, was approved on Tuesday.

Municipal staff said the new rule is needed to protect the birds from an improper diet and to avoid water pollution caused by increased waterfowl waste.

But Coun. Dawn Sloane isn't sure it's the right move.

"I think it will be very difficult to enforce. Which one do you arrest? The person who feeds it or the duck that eats it? I'll leave it at that," Sloane said with a laugh.

Violators face a minimum $200 fine.
