Hearings begin to end Canso as town

A plan to dissolve the Town of Canso is being heard by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board.

A plan to dissolve the Town of Canso is being heard by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board.

The financially troubled town is officially asking to give up its town status and amalgamate with the Municipality of the District of Guysborough.

Hearings begin Monday in Canso's fire hall. The board will make a decision after hearing about the pros and cons of the application.

Canso, on the northeastern tip of mainland Nova Scotia, has been a fishing port since 1604 and an independent town with its own charter since 1901.
