Dashcam captures head-on crash in weekend hit and run

RCMP say they are still searching for thedriver of a car that barrelled into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle,injuring three people and shutting down a section of oneof Nova Scotia's busiest highways for several hours over the weekend.

Dashcamvideo from a nearby vehicle captured the moment a blue hatchback travelling on the wrong side of a divided section of Highway 102 smashed into a Jeep, which spun out and rolled into a ditch.

All three occupants of the SUV were injured, one seriously, and were taken to hospital.

The car's driver fled the scene on foot.

In an email on Monday, RCMP Cpl. Guillaume Tremblay said officers were still working to identify the driverand determine whether the car was stolen.

He said the car had recently been sold in a private saleand hadn't been registered yet with Access Nova Scotia.

Officers also founddrugs, in pill form, and cellphones when they searched the vehicle, Tremblay said.

RCMP said they received a report at 9:10 a.m. Saturday of a blue Toyota Echo travelling at high speed that went through a red light on Windmill Road in Dartmouth.

About 10 minutes later, police received a second report of thesame vehicle driving outbound on the inbound lane alongHighway 118, the spokesperson said.

At9:25 a.m. police saidthey responded to a report of a head-on collision on Highway 102when the same Toyota collided with a Jeep Wrangler.

Highway 102 inbound near Miller Lake was closed for several hours as police examined the scene and searched the area with the help of police dogs.

Policeissued a request to the public for information about the driver and photos or video of the car leading up to the crash.

An RCMP spokesperson saidthey believethe person may have been injured, given the severity of the crash.
