HMCS Toronto crew puts out fire on Christmas Day

A fire broke out aboard HMCS Toronto on Christmas Day, but it was put out quickly and no one was hurt.

The National Defence Department says the fire started in the after auxiliary machine room on the ship, currently in the Mediterranean Sea as part of Operation Reassurance.

"The fire was extinguished in minimal time with no injuries and very little damage," Ashley Lemire, a departmentspokesperson, said Sunday.

"All members of the ship's company who were exposed have been checked out by medical professionals and have been verified as fit to work."

HMCS Toronto was deployed in July as part of the response to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. It replaced HMCS Regina.

Lemire said the mission was not affected by the fire. She said the families of all those aboard the ship have been notified about what happened.

This isn't the first fire aboard HMCS Toronto.

In 2005, several crew members were taken to hospital after a fire broke out in the forward machine room while the ship was docked in Halifax.
