1 of 2 inmates accused of escaping Dartmouth jail facing 36 charges

One of two men accused of escaping from Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth last month has been charged with 36 offences spanning the last 11 days.

One of two men accused of escaping from the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth last month faces 36 charges in connection with offences spanning 11 days.

Halifax Regional Police arrested Chad Clarke on Mondayafter officers stopped what was believed to be a stolen vehicle on Frederick Avenue in Halifax around 2 a.m. AT.

A woman was also taken into custody.

Clarke and another man, Thomas Joseph Smith, are accused of escaping the jail in Burnside in the early morning hours of Sept. 23.

Clarke, 28,was on remand at the jail for charges that included theft of a motor vehicle, theft under $5,000, possession and breaking and entering.

Smith, 31, was on remand for charges including robbery, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, driving while disqualified, failure to attend court and breach of conditions.

36 charges laid

Police said Tuesday thatClarke faces a lengthy list of charges, including nine counts of breaking and entering, in connection with a spate of break-ins and thefts since Sept. 23. The charges also include theft of a motor vehicle and mail theft.

Clarke is also charged withescaping lawful custody andflight from police.He wasscheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court on Tuesday.

Police said Monday they continue to search for Smith. Heis described as six feet tall and180 pounds, with brown hair, blue eyes and a beard.

The investigation is ongoing.

The provincial Justice Department has said itplans to do a full review of the incident.
