Notorious Halifax criminal Jimmy Melvin was charged Wednesday with possession of stolen property, breach of probation and mischief after police raided a Lower Sackville apartment on Tuesday night.

Halifax RCMP said a 33-year-old man fled to the rooftop of a Walker Avenue apartment building while police executed a search warrant inside.

RCMP received a complaint at 7 a.m. on Tuesday about a vehicle stolen from a business on Akerley Boulevard in Dartmouth. That led them to an apartment complex on Walker Avenue.

Matthew Hallmer, who lives on Walker Avenue, said he came home Tuesday night to find his street closed and his building surrounded by armed RCMP officers.

"We were just getting out of the car down the street and we noticed a bunch of people were standing around so we joined them," he said.

"Next thing we knew, we saw a guy on the roof, he had his legs dangling off the side. He was saying he wouldn't come down because he was afraid the cops would shoot him."

Officers went to the building at about 7:30 p.m. where they executed a search warrant inside one of the units.

A statement from police said several stolen items were found inside the unit.

Police arrested a 33-year-old woman inside and discovered a man had left the apartment through a patio door and climbed up on the roof of the building. They negotiated with him for about an hour and a half before he came down voluntarily and was arrested.

A 27-year-old man was also arrested a short time later on Sackville Drive.

All three will each face charges of theft under $5,000, said RCMP Cpl. Greg Church.
