Kirwan's boyfriend questioned in her disappearance

Police have questioned Amber Kirwan's boyfriend as the search for the missing 19-year-old woman continues in New Glasgow.

Mason Campbell told CBC News Wednesday that he has talked to investigators twice, for a total of about four hours.

Kirwan, 19, was last seen at about 1: 30 a.m. Sunday when she left her friends at Dooly's pool hall. She was walking to meet Campbell at a nearby convenience store when she disappeared.

Campbell said he understands that he is considered a person of interest in Kirwan's disappearance, but he said he has been completely honest with police.

"I haven't slept since Saturday. I have been having trouble remembering, you know, what I've done from the time she went missing, the next day when I started searching," he said.

"I've had trouble picking out bits and pieces of what I was doing completely that day. But for the most part they have every bit of my informationeverything I've done, any leads I've followed up on, any calls I've gotten. They know everything."

Campbell and Kirwan had lived together for four months, and he said they had a normal relationship.

"A common relationship.She gets upset if I have something else I have to do rather than hang out with her. For the most part, I don't get upset vice versa about that. I encourage her to hang out with her friends and stuff," he said.

Campbell blames himself for not trying harder to locate her the night she went missing.

"I should've been there. I should've waited longer around there. I should've tried harder to skim up and down that road," he said.

Campbell said he didn't go directly to the club to pick her up because his car inspection is out of date.

"I can'tdrive after midnight, and Idid havea couple drinks and I was tired. You know, I wasn't preparing myself for a situation like this," he said.

Five crews from across the province joined the search effort in the New Glasgow area Wednesday.

"When there is something like this, everybody comes together, I guess, and help each other and help with what we can," Dave Harrison, of Springhill Search and Rescue said. "Hope we get some good news."

Campbell is starting to fear the worst.

"At this point, I just hope to God she's in a house and she's warm and she's safe, and she's not out here being exposed to the elements.That's all I can stress right now is that I hope I do not find her during search and rescue."

New Glasgow Fire Rescue added three kayaks to search the East River, which runs through the centre of town.

"They draw very little water and they're able to get into the small coves and small areas where we normally wouldn'tbe able to takea motorized boat," New Glasgow fire chief Doug Dort said.

Campbell said he's grateful to all the people trying to locate Kirwan, but her disappearance doesn't make sense.

"We were meant for each other, we were meant to be together right now," he said. "This can't be happening, this is a nightmare right now."
