Kristin Johnston, slain Bikram yoga instructor, mourned in Halifax

Friends and members of the yoga community in Halifax are mourning the loss of Kristin Johnston, who was killed over the weekend.

Police say the 32-year-old woman'sbody was found in her home on Oceanview Drive on Saturday morning. They say a man who lived in Johnston's house is a "person of interest."

Though he was initially arrested at the scene, police say the manwas released that afternoon and remained in hospital with "significant but not life threatening injuries."

On Sunday evening, police said they had yet to question the man due to his condition but were not looking for anyone else in connection with the case. Another man who lived at the home was questioned by police and released when he was ruled out as a suspect.

Johnston opened a well-known hot yoga studio in downtown Halifax in 2011. Bikram Yoga was renamed 42 Degrees Fitness and Wellness earlier this year and the Grafton Street business closed about a month ago.

On her former website, Johnston isdescribed as having a passion for teaching yoga and drawing strength from the practice. She said she dreamed of travelling with her brother and sister and loved music.

As news of her death spread, many former students and friends turned to social media to express their sadness.

"Kristin was a shining light who fiercely believed in the benefits of yoga and just wanted to share that with others," Moksha Yoga Halifax posted to Facebook. The studio has been offering classes to people who still had passes to Johnston's studio.

Rio Halifax, a yoga studio in the city's north end, said it will be closing Monday as a vow of silence and there will be a candlelit meditation in honour of Johnston "to celebrate her light and life."

Forensic investigators spent hours at her house Sunday collecting evidence and processing the scene. Johnston bought the property last year.

Police expect to continue working at the scene Monday.
