Man, 40, dies in apparent drowning

An autopsy is planned Tuesday on the body of a man who died Monday at a swimming hole in northern Nova Scotia.

John Logan Powell, 40, of Oxford, was swimming with family and friends at Drysdale Falls, near Tatamagouche.

The RCMP said Powell was last seen trying to jump into the pool at the bottom of the falls.

Firefighters recovered his body about a half-hour later, but first had to rappel downto the water.

Though an autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death,the RCMP said it appears that it was an accidental drowning.

Deputy fire Chief Ian MacDonald said even though the swimming hole is known as a dangerous place, many people head for it when the weather warms up.
