SIRT to investigate death of man following arrest Sunday night

The team that investigates serious incidents involving police is looking into the case of a 66-year-old man who died after he was arrested Sunday night.

The Serious Incident Response Team, known as SIRT, said the man was picked up at about 8:30 p.m. after police searched a vehicle at the ferry terminal in North Sydney.

The man was in medical distress when police brought him to a jail cell in Sydney, and police performed CPR and First Aid until paramedics arrived, SIRT said in a news release Monday.

The man later died at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

No other details about the man or his arrest were given. SIRT is asking anyone with information to call 902-424-2010.

Cape Breton Regional Police referred the case to SIRT, which is responsible for investigating these kinds of incidents. A summary report is due three months after the investigation is over.
