Halifax police have charged a 21-year-old man with second-degree murder following the death of Shakur Oshay Trevez Jefferies on Saturday.

Police say Carvel Clayton was one of five people questioned. Another 21-year-old man in that group has had his parole revoked and is being returned to Correctional Services. The remaining three have been released and are not charged.

He was gunned down near an apartment building called the Crown on Regency at 610 Washmill Lake Dr.

Another shooting

Halifax police also reported another shooting took place in Bedford at 5:25 a.m. Sunday.

A 29-year-old man from Bedford was injured and taken to the QEII Health Sciences Centre, police said. His injuries are described as not life threatening. He was released from hospital at 12:20 p.m. Sunday.

Police have spoken to the victim but said it's not clear where the shooting took place. However, cruisers could be seen at the 100 block of Redden Court in Bedford Sunday morning.

Investigators are waiting for a warrant to search a home in that area where it's believed the victim lived. They're trying to determine if the shooting took place inside or at a different location.

Police are also canvassing the neighbourhood in an attempt to retrace the victim's steps before the shooting.

Tips on the shooting can be sent to police at 902-490-5016 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Police could not say if the two shootings are related.

Police question 5 men

Police said they were at the scene of Saturday night's shooting within seconds of receiving the 911 calls, because they were already in the area dealing with a collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle a few hundred metres away.

Jefferies's family arrived shortly after, police said.

Later, two armed officers entered the apartment building. They were seen on a fourth floor balcony with flashlights.
