No preliminary hearing for mom accused of killing daughter

The stage has been set for the case of a Nova Scotia woman accused of killing her daughter to proceed to trial.

Penny Boudreau, charged with first-degree murder in the death of 12-year-old Karissa, waived her right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday. A lawyer appeared in Bridgewater provincial court on her behalf.

Prosecutor Paul Scovil said the defence likely believes there is enough material to go to trial.

"The defence has access to all our disclosure material and they don't feel there is anything they need to address,"he told reporters outside court.

With no preliminary hearing, the case moves on "significantly," Scovil said.

He said the case will move to Nova Scotia Supreme Court in early December, whenthe two sidesare expected to set hearing dates.

Karissa Boudreau was reported missing on Jan. 27. Her frozen body was discovered Feb. 9 on the banks of the LaHave River outside the town of Bridgewater.

Penny Boudreau, 34,was charged in June.

She remainsin custody at a facility in Dartmouth.
