Parts of Nova Scotia could get up to 15 cm of snow

Environment Canada has issued wind and snowfall warnings, as well as special weather statements, for most of Nova Scotia because of a low-pressure system approaching the Maritimes.

Most of the province is under snow or wind warnings

The expected snowfall would mark the first major one of the season in Nova Scotia. (Reuters)

Environment Canada has issued wind and snowfall warnings, as well as special weather statements, for most of Nova Scotia because of a low-pressure system approaching the Maritimes.

The weather forecaster says the following areas can expect about15 centimetres of snow:

  • Colchester County
  • Cumberland County
  • Halifax County
  • Hants County
  • Pictou County

Environment Canada says these areas should receive rain overnight or early Sunday morning, which will then turn to wet snow as northeasterly winds bringin colder air.

Wind warnings

Wind warnings are in place for most of northern Nova Scotia.

Gusts are expected to reach up to 90 km/h for part of Sunday, before spiking to between 90 and 120 km/h during the afternoon and evening, before diminishing Sunday night.

The following areas are subject to the wind warning:

  • Antigonish County
  • Guysborough County
  • Inverness County
  • Pictou County
  • Richmond County
  • Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County
  • Victoria County

A wind and snow warning is in effect for Pictou County.

Special weather statement

Environment Canada's special weather statement is calling for rain and snow tonight and Sunday. It applies to:

  • Kings County
  • Lunenburg County

Only five counties are not under any weather warning, special weather statementor watch:

  • Annapolis County
  • Digby County
  • Yarmouth County
  • Shelburne County
  • Queens County
