NSCAD University has announced Dianne Taylor-Gearing, a veteran professor of art and design, has been appointed the next president of the school.

Taylor-Gearing takes over for Daniel O'Brien, who began his term as president in May 2012. She will officially take over the position Aug. 4.

"We welcome professor Taylor-Gearing to Halifax and to NSCAD University," Grant Machum, chair of NSCAD's Board of Governors, said in a news release.

"She has substantial experience working with independent arts institutions in the U.K., United States and Canada and providing guidance through times of change. A skilled leader and administrator, shes known for her team-building approach."

According to the NSCAD statement, Taylor-Gearing has more than 27 years of experience teaching art and design.

"I'm delighted to be joining an outstanding art and design institution with an international reputation and a rich history," said Taylor-Gearing from her home in Calgary.

"I'm attracted by NSCAD University being a small institution with such a committed community and the opportunity to lead in a presidential role."

Taylor-Gearing served for two years as the vice-president of research and academic affairs at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary.

Prior to her position at ACAD, Taylor-Gearing was the pro-vice chancellor and executive dean at the University for the Creative Arts and the head of the faculty of design at Ravensbourne, both in the U.K. She was also the vice-president of admission at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga.
