Parents want Strait school board review

Parents in eastern Nova Scotia want an external review of the Strait Regional School Board, saying inaccurate information was presented during the school closure review process.

Parentsin eastern Nova Scotia wantan external review of the Strait Regional School Board, saying inaccurate information was presented during the school closure review process.

Randy Delorey, a spokesman for the Save Community Schools group, said the board was using misleading and erroneous information when it was trying to justify closing a number of schools in the district.

"Each incident may be overlooked by individuals, even the public or even in the board, as simple mistakes," he said Wednesday.

"What happened was, we discovered a pattern and collectively we are concerned with what that might represent."

The Strait Regional School Board had started the process of reviewing three of its mainland schools Maryvale, Heatherton and Canso Academy for possible closure earlier this year.

As part of that process, the board prepared impact assessment reports on how the students and community would be affected by school closures.

The board mistakenly believed a new deadline was in place andhad those reports ready at the end of September. When parents discovered the deadline was actually four months prior, they complained to the education minister. The board eventually voted to abandon its review.

Delorey said Save Community Schools wants a follow-up review by someone independent of the school board.
