Police rule suspicious death in Purcells Cove a homicide

Police in Halifax have ruled a suspicious death in Purcells Cove a homicide and they have identified Kristin Elizabeth Johnston as the victim.

Police in Halifax have ruled asuspicious death in Purcells Cove a homicide and they have identified32-year-old Kristin Elizabeth Johnston as the victim.

They discovered Johnston's body inside her homeSaturday morningshortly before 8 a.m. after receiving a call from inside the house onOceanview Drive.

Johnston was living in Halifax but wasn't originally from Nova Scotia, police say.

Johnston worked as a yoga instructor in Halifax and used to own Bikram Yoga, which was renamed 42 Degrees Fitness and Wellness earlier this year. The Grafton Street studio closed about a month ago.

Her biography on the former studio's website says she fell in love with Nova Scotia after visiting in 2010.

"She felt extremely comfortable and grounded in Halifax and hoped to one day make it her home," the site says.

Many of Johnston's friends,former students, and other yoga studios have taken to social media to express shock and grief at her death.

A Halifax Regional Police spokeswomansays the medical examiner's office conducted an autopsy this morning but they are not releasing the cause death at this point.

Person of interest also lived in home

There is one person of interest in the case:a man in his thirties who also lived in the home, saidTheresaRath, a spokeswoman for police.

He wasarrested at thescene and taken to hospital. Heremains there due to injuries police are calling "significant but not life threatening."

"Based on that information, we actually released him from our custody yesterday," said Rath.

They say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation, but they have not been able to question him yet.

Rathsaidpolice would not discuss details of the relationship between Johnston and the man because the investigation is stillin the early stages.

Initially, police said two men were arrested at the scene. They later clarified that one man was questioned by police and released when he was ruled out as a suspect.

Rath said that man also lived in the home.

Investigators with the forensic identification unitbegan gathering evidence atthe crime scenelate Saturday afternoon and were at theOceanview Drive home again Sunday. The property is registered in Johnston's name.

Rath expects officers will continue gathering evidenceon Monday.
