Political leaders come together over McCartney concert

A wigged-put premier and barefoot mayor have put their best foot forward to promote the upcoming Paul McCartney concert in Halifax.

Premier Darrell Dexter and Mayor Peter Kelly staged a re-creation of the Beatles iconic Abbey Road album cover Wednesday on a Halifax street.

Dexter donned a wig to play Ringo Starr, while Kelly stood as the bare-footed McCartney. Two members of a Beatles tribute band joined them.

Dexter wasn't sure what to expect when he arrived for the morning shoot at the corner of Cornwallis and Bauer streets.

He only found out about the wig then.

"The mayor asked me to come along and do this. So if it promotes tourism for the province and this event, I'm happy to participate," said Dexter.

Dexter said he didn't know why he was asked to be Ringo, but said he hoped it was because the drummer was still alive.

The site was staged to make it as similar as possible to the original photo. Municipal crews painted white lines on the road the night before, and a Volkswagen Beetle was parked in the background.

McCartney is playing an outdoor concert at the Halifax Common on Saturday. It's his only show in Canada this year.
