Purcells Cove Road propane truck crash kills 49-year-old cyclist

A 49-year-old cyclist is dead after a collision with a Superior Propane truck Wednesday morning on Purcells Cove Road in Halifax.

A 49-year-old cyclist is dead after a collision with a Superior Propane truck Wednesday morning on Purcells Cove Road in Halifax.

Witnesses told police the woman was struck shortly after 8:30 a.m., said Const. Stacey Opalka, a spokesperson for the Halifax Regional Police. The victim's identity has not been disclosed.

"The woman's identity is now confirmed, but we have to contact next of kin," Opalka said.

Purcells Cove Road wasclosed from Spinnaker Drive to Herring Cove Road for several hours. It reopened at around 3:30 p.m.

Greg McCamus, president of Superior Propane, said the company is working with Halifax police.

"We're devastated," he said. "Our team locally is currently co-operating fully with the investigation that's going on.

"I don't have any details really about what happened. But it's just tragic news and our hearts go out to the family."

The Halifax Cycling Coalition said the crash is part of a wider issue in the city, although they wouldn't comment about this accident until more details emerge.

In a statement, board member Blair Barrington said the crash underscores that everyone on the road must look out for each other.

"We need to work together to ensure that getting to work is not a life and death matter," he said.
