Raids a 'serious blow' to drug trade

Police say they have made a big dent in the drug trade, with the arrests of some members of the upper echelon of the Hells Angels' drug network.

About 60 people were arrested in raids Wednesday most in New Brunswick and Quebec. But two people were picked up in Halifax, one in Newfoundland and one in Paris.

In New Brunswick alone, police seized $1 million in cocaine, marijuana and other drugs. They also seized seven homes, five cottages, three businesses, 30 motor vehicles and many firearms.

At least 12 of the people arrested in New Brunswick are believed to be associates or members of the Hells Angels or the affiliated Damners club. The 12 were transported to Quebec City for arraignment.

Among the accused is 38-year-old Maurice Gagnon, who police say is the president of the New Brunswick chapter of the Damners.
