Rainfall amounts across Nova Scotia pass 130 mm

The long rain event brought flooding across Nova Scotia. Parts ofHalifax saw 104 millimetres fall, while New Ross and Shearwater recorded about 130 millimetres.

On average, Nova Scotia gets 101.8 millimetres of rain for the entire month of December. Add together snow and rain, and you still only get a monthlyaverage of143.3 millimetres.

CBC meteorologistKalinMitchell says several dozen new daily rainfall records were set across theMaritimesby thetorrential rain.The criteria for the record is rainfall during the 24-hour period between2 a.m.Dec.10 and2 a.m.Dec.11.

New records were set in Brier Island (73.8 mm, beating a 23.3 mm record from 2008), Kejimkujik (88.8 mm, beating 74.9 mm in 1975), Debert (59.5 mm, beating a 37.3 record from 1950) and Malay Falls (56.3 mm, beating 24.4 mm in 1950).

Nappan's80.4 mm bested its previous record of 24.4 set way back in 1928.
