Nova Scotia RCMPhave charged a man in relation to hate-motivated threats and mischief including an incident in whichurine and garbage were left outside a mosquein Antigonish, N.S.

The 69-year-old man from Antigonish was charged on Monday with causing a disturbance and mischief motivated by bias, prejudice or hate. He has been released on conditions and is scheduled to appear at Antigonish provincial court on Oct. 16, police said in a news release on Tuesday.

In a news release last week, police said they received a report of a man who was using a mobile device to recorda group of women and childrenon July 23.

"When a woman in the group asked him to stop recording, he made threats and comments related to the perceived race and background of the group members," police said in the release. "He left on foot and did not follow through on the threats."

Police have said they believe the same man is responsible for leaving garbage and urine in front of a mosque on July 28, based on witness statements, photos and surveillance footage.

"Based on the nature of the comments made and the acts at the mosque, investigators believe that both incidents were motivated by hate. The RCMP takes incidents of hate with utmost seriousness and condemns these criminal acts," police said on Friday.
