Relaunched Yarmouth ferry fees to start at $83

People hoping to use the relaunched ferry service between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and Portland, Maine now know how much the trip will cost them.

Nova Star Cruises releases fares for service set to begin in May

People hoping to use the relaunched ferry service between Yarmouth, N.S., and Portland, Maine, now know how much the trip will cost them.

Nova Star Cruises, which is operating the line, released its rates for the service when it returns in May 2014.

The posted fares are in U.S. dollars, but converted, an adult can walkon for about $83 one-way in the cheapest season.Fees for children are about half that cost, while kids under five are free.

Those who are opting to take a car with two people will pay approximately $529 return.

The initial ferry service between Yarmouth and Portland was cancelled in December2009 when the Nova Scotia government cut the subsidy for the CAT, the previoushigh-speed ferry which was losing money at the time. The end of the service caused significant outcry from people who live in the Yarmouth area.

The provincial government is now spending $21 million over seven years to restart the service.

The new boat is being touted as a high-end experience and includes fine dining, a casino, a conference centre and art gallery.
