Scott Jones's family thanks supporters after stabbing

The family of a young man who was paralyzed after a stabbing in New Glasgow earlier this month is speaking out publicly for the first time.

Scott Jones, 27, is recovering after he was stabbed in the back twice and his throat was slashed on Oct. 12. The injury to Jones' throat was superficial but the stabbing severed his spinal cord, leaving him a paraplegic.

Jones was left paralyzed from the waist down after the stabbing.

His story quickly spread on the internet,and strangers have donated more than $41,000 to a trust fundto help cover his expenses.

On Tuesday his family posted a YouTube video thanking supporters.

Initially we were just really grateful Scott was alive. We never dreamed there would be such overwhelming support for Scott and his family, said his mother.

We all feel, Scott included, that were being cradled in the arms of those who love him and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Friends and family have said they believe Jones was attacked because he's gay. Police have not commented on allegations the attack was motivated by his sexual orientation.

Shane Edward Matheson, 19, of Trenton is facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace in the case. He appeared briefly in Pictou provincial court last week and had a bail hearing set for Oct. 31.
