Lots of snow for Nova Scotia as winter weather roller-coaster continues

The temperature plunged on Monday after record-setting temperatures across the Maritimes over the weekend.

As much as 40 cm was expected in Cape Breton, 10 to 15 cm expected elsewhere

Another wintry blast closed schools across Nova Scotia on Monday as parts of the province dealt with a dumping of upwardof 40 centimetres of snow.

All of Cape Breton was under a winter storm warning, where between 20 and 40 centimetres was expected to fall by Monday evening andwinds were expected to gustbetween 50 and 70 km/h.

Environment Canada alsohad snowfall warningsin place for all of mainland Nova Scotia. The national weather service said in a statement the light texture of the snow, combined with colder temperatures, would likely mean whiteout conditions on roads and highways.

Schools across the province wereclosed, as well as most Nova Scotia Community College campuses. Cape Breton University wasclosed for the day, as werethe Halifax and Truro campuses ofDalhousie University.

The overnight winter parking ban was to be enforced across the Halifax regionon Tuesday between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. ATto allow crews to properly clear streets and sidewalks.

Temperature records smashed Saturday

The temperature also plunged on Monday after record-setting temperatures across the Maritimes this weekend. Saturdaywas the warmest on record for the date Feb. 12 in five parts of Nova Scotia, according to Environment Canada.

Halifax recorded12 C, beating theprevious record of 10.3 Cset in 1981. Greenwood, Kejimkujik, Kentvilleand Parrsboro also saw record-breaking temperatures on Saturday.

In New Brunswick, theGrand Manan and St. Stephen areasbroke temperature records on Saturday as well. The temperature on Grand Mananreached10 C, smashingits record of 7 C from 1998.
