Walmart to sell groceries at supercentres in HRM

Walmart is planning to expand some of its stores in the Halifax region and add a full-sized grocery store.

Walmart is planning to expand some of its stores in the Halifax regionand add a full-sized grocery store.

The company calls them supercentres, but it won't give details and say which stores will be expanded.

Regardless, it's welcome news to Barbara Walsh, a shopper at the Walmart store on Mumford Road.

"I think it's a good idea because they have everything else," she told CBC News.

Dan Shaw, a marketing specialist at Dalhousie University, said it will have an impact on other big grocery companies like Sobeys and Superstore.

"Walmart can buy in massive quantities," he said. "They are 10 times the size of Superstore's parent company."

Shaw doesn't expect Sobeys and Superstore to roll over. He said both aresophisticated and successful companies that appeal to particular customers.

Shaw said shoppers are the real winners because they stand to save money from increased competition and lower prices.
