Teen arrested in death of man found on Halifax sidewalk

A 17-year-old is in custody facing second-degree murder charges following the stabbing death of a Cole Harbour resident earlier this week, police said.

A 17-year-old is in custody facing second-degree murder charges following the stabbing death of a Cole Harbour resident earlier this week, police said.

The teenager, accompanied by a parent, showed up at police headquarters on Thursday night and turned himself in.

Jeff Carr, a spokesman for Halifax Regional police, saidinvestigators had been actively looking for the Dartmouth teenager this week. The youth is scheduled for a court hearing on Monday.

Matthew James Ayer, 28, died on a Halifax sidewalk from stab wounds early Monday morning, after beingfound lying on Gottingen Street around 3:20 a.m.Police and paramedics arrived, but he diedat the scene.

Few other details have been released surrounding Ayer's death, which isthe fifth homicide in the Halifax Regional Municipality this year.
