Three teens injured, rescued from pond after crash near Yarmouth

A 17-year-old boy was air lifted to Halifax with life-threatening injuries after the collision late Saturday morning. Yarmouth RCMP say people waded in a chest-deep water to pull the car closer to shore and rescue two teens who were trapped.

Firefighters and community members pulled the car out of the pond.

A 17-year-old boy haslife-threatening injuries after his vehicle landed in a pond on Nova Scotia'sSouth Shore Saturday morning.

The teen driverwasairlifted to hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia RCMP spokesman Cpl. Greg Church said.

Two passengers, ages 17 and 19, suffered minor injuries, and have been released from hospital.

Around 11:30 a.m. the vehiclefailed to negotiate a sharp turnoutbound on Highway 304 near Overton, a villageonekilometre northwest of Yarmouth, RCMP said.

Rescuers waded into chest-deep water

The vehicle went off the road andlandedon its roof in the pond, the release said. The front-seat passenger, the 17-year-old, escaped and got to shore.

The others were trapped, but firefighters, emergency respondersand a few volunteers waded into the chest-deep water.

"I'm assuming some of them were even perhaps dogpaddling their way out to the vehicle. Then they all together pulled the vehicle closer to where they could get a good grip," Church said.

"They turned the vehicle over onto its bottom so they could get the people out of it."

Highway 304 between Vancouver Street and Overton Road was closed Saturday. Traffic wasbeing routed through Main Shore Road to Overton Road.

The RCMP have a traffic reconstruction analyst helping to determine the cause of the crash.
