CBC to present Tragically Hip concert at Halifax's Grand Parade

The Tragically Hip concert screening Aug. 20 will be a full-day affair with a street party on Argyle Street, live music and Hip-themed business events.

If youcan't make the Tragically Hip's concertin Kingston, Ont., on Aug. 20, CBC will be presenting a freescreening of the show live at Halifax's Grand Parade, startingat 9:30 p.m. AT.

CBC and TheTragicallyHippresent TheTragicallyHip: A National Celebration will also air live on CBC televisionfor those watching from home.

The Downtown Halifax Business Commission has added some Tragically Hip events, turning Aug. 20 into a full-day celebration of the group.

It will include live musicandthe closure of Argyle Street for a day-long street party, the commission said in a news release Thursday.

Online petitions to air concert

The free, family-friendly event is supported by the mayor's office and HRM. Any fundraising components will go tosupporttheCanadian Cancer Society Nova Scotia Division.

The band announced in Junethat lead singerGord Downiehad been diagnosed with incurable brain cancer back in December.

The idea to broadcast the concert on CBC came after fans of the band started online petitions and wrote letters to management.

The concertcoincides with the group's latest album release,Man Machine Poem.
