Two people dead after separate crashes in Cumberland County

The RCMP are investigating two separate fatal crashes that happened on highways in Nova Scotia'sCumberland County on Monday.

The first collision happened around 12:30 p.m. on Highway 104 inUpper Nappan.

Police said a grey Subaru Forester was travelling eastbound in the westbound lane when it collided head-on with a grey Ford F-150. Most of the highway in that area is divided.

The driver and only occupant of the Subaru, a 61-year-old Prince Edward Island woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and only occupant of the Ford, a 59-year-old Stellarton woman, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

A section of Highway 104 was closed for several hours as police investigated, but was later reopened.

Second crash in Mapleton

Around 1:49 p.m., officers were called to another crash on Highway 2 inMapleton.

The Mounties said a beige Toyota Tacoma was travelling on the highwaywhen it left the roadway, hit a power pole and came to restoverturnedin the ditch.

The driver and only occupant of the Toyota, a 71-year-old Southampton man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A collision reconstructionist went tothe scene and the investigation is ongoing.
