Vacant trailer where needles found faces wrecking ball

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is threatening to tear down a mobile home police say is a drug den and party house, and send the owner the bill.

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is threatening to tear down a mobile home police say is a drug den and party house, and send the owner the bill.

The vacant trailer in New Waterford is littered with drug paraphernalia, clothing, children's toys and food scraps.

"As you can see here we have a large amount of hypodermic needles," Const. Gary Fraser said Wednesday. "We have spoons with white power on it and we have rubber bands."

Police say they have found more than 100 needles in the unlocked building, including some with the tips exposed.

"It's very alarming and very dangerous here for anyone that can come in contact with it," said Fraser.

Neighbour Kathryn Rigby says a family moved in about eight months ago. From her front window she watched a flow of traffic coming and going at all hours of the night.

"They tore that place apart," she said. "There is garbage all over the place."

Shirley Leadbeater recalls going to the trailerto get her daughter, a 17-year-old drug addict.

"It brings back some horrible memories and thoughts no parents should have to go through," Leadbeater said.

Police say the owner of the mobile home has 30 days to secure the site or the municipality will demolish the trailer and send the bill to the owner.
